Sept 5

Another girls day! I headed out early for the National Gallery with the objective of seeing one particular painting (more on that later), but once I was inside, I just couldn't tear myself away. To stand in front of these masterpieces is just mesmerizing. The amazing talent of these artists defies description. Almost all my pics today are art. I hope you enjoy!

I have been wanting a vintage dress from the 1910s, 20s or 30s ---must be a reaction to the beautiful clothes on Downton Abbey -- and it occurred to me that London might be a great place to shop for that; I've had no luck in the US. So I googled for some vintage clothing stores and stopped by several today. While they certainly had more clothing of that era than I've found in the US, the prices were pretty high. *sigh* No vintage for me. But I did have a lovely rooftop lunch in Marylebone, above the flea/antique market.

I raced back to Charing Cross via the tube and just made the 2:00 tour of the Ben Franklin house. It was a very different type of tour, a costumed guide interacted with a pre-recorded dialogue. I thought it was interesting because it was unique, but I did hear one American on the tour say disparagingly "this is not what I expected". Can't please everyone!

CFA society sponsored a social/ heavy hors d'oeuvre gathering tonight. We all rode in double decker buses thru town to the Natural History Museum. Under the giant skeleton of some prehistoric creature, we nibbled, drank and socialized. A very nice event.

Tomorrow morning wraps up Farley's conference and he will be free to sightsee once again! I'm glad and I KNOW he's glad!

Oh, one last thing: the impetus for me to head over to the National Gallery this morning was "The Execution of Lady Jane Grey". I think she is one of the saddest historical characters ever. The painting was enormous, approx 8' x 10'. It's actually difficult for me to look at for too long knowing her story and the challenges she faced in her short life.
