Flights yesterday were good, minimal departure delays but made up time in the air so landed on time. Our B&B is fine, a good size room, but no view. We don't care as we don't plan to spend much time here.
We arrived at about 8:30 this morn and took a bus from the airport to the train station. I think we took the scenic route, no stops but a lot of driving thru the city when there was a more direct route. We dropped our bags and headed right out to the Colosseum. Well, I confess we did a quick pizza stop to load up on some carbs before playing tourist. The Colosseum is
magnificent! The size and architectural significance of the Roman buildings and even the ruins is amazing and humbling. We had loaded several Rick Steves tours onto the iPads so we were able to avoid hooking up with any of
the plethora of tours going on and set our own schedule as we roamed thru the Colosseum and the Forum. We ended up at the cafe terrace high in the Victor Emmanuel monument where Farley partook of a Peroni Italian beer (served in a cabernet glass), while I stuck to soda. A quick stop at San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains) church which houses the chains that
held St. Peter as well as an amazing Moses sculpture by Michelangelo, and we hit the Metro for a quick ride home. But, oops, it was Rome rush hour and the subway cars were packed....and hot....and smelled really bad. It made us feel like a couple of locals and having been outside in the heat all day, I am sure we contributed to the aroma of the car!
We are dog-tired but I'm thinking quick showers will be refreshing and give us just enough energy to last through dinner. It will be an early night for us so we will be fresh for more adventures tomorrow.
Ciao!
